Task 2: My Design Career

| Thursday, August 19, 2010

Ultimately I wanted to enter a field that I’d find myself happiest in. I came to this conclusion as I’d always hear stories from people who chose their profession on the basis of the expectations of their peers and family members which left them in a repetitious and monotonous career. It would only be after years of contemplation that they would decide to pursue their true desires and finally find their place of happiness. In order to avoid that same path, I chose to study something that best suited me and my purpose in my lifetime and something that I would find fulfilment in.

One aspect of design that intrigues me is the world of designing things that are not apprehensible; that realm of design that is breathtakingly beautiful and indescribable, leaving you lost for words. Such concepts leave me in awe, and I have always desired to one day manifest an idea that is beyond our established preconceived ideas and beliefs.

On the contrary, simple everyday situations articulate great needs and works of design. It would be of great reward to be able to alleviate any frustrations and difficulties that surround everyday living. I remember when I was younger, I often stumbled upon little inconveniences where I saw a need for a better option. I would make things often out of scraps that my mum considered rubbish (bits and pieces that I used to save thinking one day it’ll become useful, and it always would) to better that situation and to make life a little simpler.
Industrial design appeared to be an opportunity to express my creativity as I found that I as somewhat limited in my ability to do so throughout my school years as I grew up conforming to the expectations of those around me rather than making personal, informed decisions. Thus I am lacking greatly in any skills that I would like to possess however I hope that it will act as motivation to learn more throughout the course. UNSW was my first preference as it is one of the few universities that offer Industrial Design and I believed it would offer the best course.

I like being able to find beauty not only in the natural world but also in products which is why Industrial Design is most appealing to me. I know that through my experiences and teachings throughout the course, I will be able to explore and appreciate life and the interaction we have with products, technology and other people to a greater extent. Slowly but surely, I’m already seeing things differently, from a new more conscious perspective. I expect that in the future I will have the opportunity to travel extensively as well as learn more than just design; to hopefully be able to delve into other aspects such as such as business, culture and life as I haven’t experienced before.
